Port

Construction of the port began in 1794 and by 1905 it acquired its modern shape. In the Russian Empire, he was 2nd in terms of cargo turnover after St. Petersburg.

An interesting fact: the building of the Odessa Port Authority is closely connected with the history of the origin of customs in Odessa. At the beginning of its existence, the port building, in combination, was the center of Odessa customs. It is in her honor named the oldest square in the city – “Customs”.

After the proclamation of Ukraine’s independence, the Odessa seaport became the largest port in Ukraine.

Potemkin Stairs

The stairs were designed by architects Boffo, Melnikov and Potier in 1835, and built in 1837-41 by engineers Upton and Morozov.

By the beginning of the XX century. the stairs did not have a permanent name. In historical documents there are the following variations: stairs of Nikolaev Boulevard, Richelieu stairs, Boulevard stairs, Port, Big stairs, Stone stairs, stairs of Feldman Boulevard, Primorsky, Potemkin. Conceived as the main entrance to the city from the sea, the stairs became the dominant architectural appearance of Odessa and its symbol.

Initially, it consisted of 200 steps, but with the expansion of the port and the waterfront, 8 of them were lost.

Arcadia Beach

Arcadia Beach was chosen by the city’s founders to accommodate the resort because of its convenient location – unlike other beaches in Odessa, the descent to the sea was gentle. The area of the city is named after the mountainous region of Greece.

In the 1920s, the Arcadia regular park was founded here, which became an important tourist center of the city.

Customs area

The customs square has collected many historical monuments on its territory and has become an important transport link in the city. The official date of its creation is considered to be 1828, when the square was called Quarantine.

Having survived almost two centuries and changed a large number of names, today it is an outstanding historical place of Odessa.
